Una misteriosa joven, Katie (Nicky Whelan), y su hija se mudan a un nuevo pueblo para escapar de su pasado y se hacen amigas de Angela Morgan (Gina Gershon), una madre que quiere tener una familia más grande. Según su relación se va desarrollando, Angela y su marido, Brian (Nicolas Cage), dejan que Katie viva en su casa de invitados para hacer de cuidadora. Con el tiempo, la amistad entre las dos mujeres va degenerando, ya que Katie se obsesiona con la hija de los Morgan.
