En los hermosos parajes marinos de la costa de Florida, cerca de la población de Pajaro Island, se abre una fisura en el lecho oceánico. Cuando el estudiante graduado Greg Chambers descubre las lecturas sísmicas, intenta contárselo a su profesor, Anthony McAlister. Greg sospecha que un terremoto masivo está a punto de dar un amargo despertar a la población de la pequeña isla. Y el epicentro está en la nueva construcción hotelera en la que Lynn, la esposa de Anthony, está trabajando.
